KANGWON NATIONAL UNIVERSITY - The KNU-KOICA Scholarship Program conducted the Statistical Package Training for the Third Batch SP students on February 3 to 4 and 11 to 12, 2020.

The two-part special training course focused mainly on Stata Program, a well-maintained proprietary statistical package which can help students manipulate data and eventually estimate advanced econometric models with relatively easy interfaces and good references from the help documents.

“The training intends to help students to be familiar with statistical packages. We heavily rely on econometric methods as economists to explain behaviors in the real market, and statistical packages are useful tools to run econometric models,” said Professor Jiyong Lee, Scholarship Program Vice Director.

“I expect students to be familiar with statistical packages and run econometric models learned from the econometrics course. Students should replicate what they learned in class and must understand the logics of the statistical package”, he added.

Dr. Sung Ju Cho, Research Fellow from the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) and Dr. Bongkyun Kim, Associate Research Fellow from the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration (KRILA), were tapped as course professors for the said training.

Dr. Cho cited that Stata is not only for professionals but also for beginners. He also advised students to practice more and learn by themselves by following sample codes in order to familiarize their data and clearly understand their research models based on theories or references.

According to Evelyn Andrade, third batch SP student, the training highlighted the relevance of data processing, the relationship between the statistical package and useful econometric models, and the interpretation of results which are very helpful in their research.

She also mentioned that she was able to discover a more advanced software aside from MS excel and she has learned how Stata works. She further recommended for a follow-up training on Stata Program in order to reinforce the knowledge acquired from the training and ensure the continuity of students’ capacity enhancement with the said statistical package.
